At Severn Arts, our music teachers aren’t just educators – they're active musicians creating and performing new and exciting music. For National Guitar Day, we’re shining a spotlight on one of our guitar teachers, Hannah Fieldhouse, whose experience as a working musician in a band brings something truly special to her lessons with Severn Arts students.

After first picking up the guitar at the age of twelve, Hannah was instantly drawn to the instrument. She quickly developed a love for rock and metal music and has spent over 20 years playing in bands. She believes the guitar’s versatility is part of what makes it so appealing to learners: I think guitar transcends over many different genres and that way, it can captivate a wide range of learners. It’s always seen as the cool instrument!’

Having faced the realities of live performance herself, this directly shapes her teaching at Severn Arts, as she keeps students’ learning relevant and grounded in real music-making. She explains how she encourages students to keep playing through mistakes rather than stopping and starting again, as this is an important skill when performing on stage or in a group. Hannah supports students build confidence in their performance, reflecting Severn Art’s commitment to developing confident and capable musicians.

For Hannah, the greatest joy as a music teacher is watching her students grow in confidenceThose breakthrough momentwhen ‘their eyes light up with excitement when they can finally hear that tune’ are what makes teaching guitar so rewarding. She also values the wide range of opportunities Severn Arts offers for students to explore different musical styles, particularly through Music Centre groups, school lesson and our music technology offer. She’s passionate about continuing to broaden these opportunities, especially with genres such as rock and metal, ensuring that students’ music-making continues to feel exciting and relevant to them.

Our Severn Arts music teachers are dedicated musicians who bring their musical experience into the classroom every dayLearning from experienced teachers like Hannah gives students the chance to develop their confidence and gain insight into what it means to both perform and make music beyond the classroom.
