News and stories Stories Grace Youngman - Placement Marketing Intern About me: Hi! My name is Grace and I'm a third-year student at the University of Worcester. I am currently studying theatre, acting and performance, which I enjoy very much. I feel very passionate about the arts and making sure people pursue their talents and interests in this area. I came across social media marketing because I very quickly realised that I didn’t want to work on a stage or perform for an audience, I wanted to transfer my skills and use them in a different way. This is when I came across doing a placement as a social media marketing intern at Severn Arts. Being creative, confident, a team worker and familiar with recent technology means that this job was recommended to me, and I immediately found an interest in it. This area of work is interesting and enjoyable, so I'm very grateful that Severn Arts gave me this opportunity. What did I learn: Marketing phone Working on the marketing phone was so interesting. I learnt that a big part of social media marketing was interacting with other people's posts and scrolling through apps like Facebook, TikTok and Instagram to see what’s trending. I already loved scrolling through these apps in my spare time, so I really enjoyed getting to do this. Graphic design on Canva I had never done any graphic design work before and had never encountered Canva, but I found real enjoyment in this work. I really enjoyed trying to figure out how all of it works and making a post that would fit in with previous Severn arts posts. I was being very specific with my placement of words and pictures, sometimes just typing a sentence took me 20 minutes longer than it should. Newsletter work Getting to work on a newsletter was amazing. There were so many different aspects that went into it, and I got to do lots of independent, creative work. I had to find information and summarise it and put it into an accessible format for the readers. I learnt a lot about how to create things that will be put online. Analytics I was most nervous about analytics, but I think it’s one of the things I enjoyed the most. I never got on well with maths and numbers but when it comes to social media analytics, it’s far more exciting. I really enjoyed putting the data in and working out what percentage following and audience interaction had increased. I learnt a lot about noticing changes in data and how to put them into Buffer. My favourite bits: Getting to work on my own projects I really enjoyed the independence I was given during the opportunity. I received a lot of support throughout but I was also given multiple opportunities to do my own work and learn how websites like Notion, Buffer and Canva work on my own. I was given lots of freedom with my work and created things from start to finish. Learning lots of new skills I learnt so many new skills here which have proved really useful for my degree, it has made my third-year experience run a lot more smoothly. Meeting all the staff I really enjoyed meeting all of the staff, they were all so lovely and welcoming. I also enjoyed working closely with Ellie over these four weeks, she has been so helpful and kind throughout, which I appreciate very much. Thank you to all the staff at Severn Arts for being so welcoming and to Laura, Severn Arts’ CEO, for offering me this opportunity. I found myself in a difficult position finding a placement and I'm so grateful for Severn Arts’ help, their kindness and support has gone a long way. Also, a massive thank you to Ellie for all her support over these four weeks, I have learnt so much from her and she’s given me so much guidance along this journey. I have loved this work experience and I'm so lucky to have had this opportunity, Severn Arts is truly one of a kind. Manage Cookie Preferences
